Kiruna Sweden

Kiruna is the northernmost and largest town in Swedish Lapland. It lies about 145 km (90 miles) north of the Arctic Circle, making it possible to experience both the midnight sun and the polar night. Kiruna is home to the famous Icehotel, which is rebuilt every year by different artists, so its appearance is constantly changing. Kiruna Church is a beautiful landmark that has won awards as one of Sweden’s most attractive buildings. It is one of the country’s largest wooden structures and is well known for its distinctive, tent-like design. Kiruna’s City Hall, inaugurated in 1963, was once voted Sweden’s most beautiful public building by Swedish architects. It houses the local government, frequently hosts exhibitions, and contains a small but well-regarded art collection featuring works by notable Swedish artists. In summer, you can visit the LKAB Iron Mine, descending about 540 metres (1,770 feet) underground to learn about mining and life in the mine. Kiruna is an excellent base for exploring the wilderness and landscapes of northern Lapland, including Sweden’s highest mountain, Kebnekaise. Several national parks are within easy reach, such as Abisko National Park, considered one of the most beautiful places in Sweden. Kiruna is a place of striking contrasts, where the summer sun remains above the horizon for almost two months, while in late December a deep blue polar night blankets the region. These contrasts are also cultural: traditional Sámi crafts and ways of life exist alongside advanced high-tech research, making Kiruna a unique European center for science and exploration.
