Chișinău Moldova

Chișinău is the capital of the Republic of Moldova, the second smallest of the former Soviet countries. The city is built on seven hills along the Bik River and is ringed by parks, gardens, and surrounding agricultural land. Although it offers relatively few conventional tourist sights—having been almost completely destroyed in World War II and rebuilt in a strictly functional Soviet style—it is a surprisingly liveable and lively city. Chișinău has excellent bars and restaurants, a vibrant nightlife, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere. One of the main surviving historic landmarks is the Nativity Cathedral, located in Cathedral Park in the very center of the city. Here you’ll also find Chișinău’s own Arc de Triomphe, the focal point of the Great National Assembly Square, and the city’s largest flower market, a bustling bazaar-like market reminiscent of those in the Middle East. At the National Museum of Archaeology and History, visitors can explore Moldova’s past. Just outside the city lies the famous Cricova winery, whose vast underground cellars and extensive international wine collection make for a memorable tour. Despite its lack of grand monuments or large cathedrals, Chișinău is an inviting place to wander and unwind for a few days. Its broad, tree-lined boulevards are perfect for leisurely walks, and the city boasts a strong cultural life, including an impressive theater scene and one of Eastern Europe’s leading ballet companies. Combined with its excellent food, Chișinău makes an ideal destination for a short city break.
